Dictionary definition of success is “The accomplishment of an aim or purpose.” Since the success is linked with an aim or purpose, true meaning of success in life is different from person to person. It depends on what you are aiming for or in other words, what is your purpose.
Many people confuse success with getting achievement in a particular task or project. These achievement can be short term depending on the task or the project in your hand.
True success is getting success in life. This one has a deeper meaning depending on what do you want to achieve in life or what is your purpose in life. So, you first need to understand your true purpose or aim to understand the true meaning of success in your life.
For example, your aim can be financial, social, spiritual, mental, emotional, communal or physical. Many people also believe success is achieving more wealth and money. This may be true if your aim is to only earn more wealth. But the question is, if this aim is correct for your life? In next few paragraphs, we will see in more details about how should we first define true aim in life and then how do we achieve success. Before we go in more details about what and how of success, let’s first understand:
Why do we need success in life ?
Success provides confidence, security and also a sense of well being. These benefits of success are important for individual to lead happy life. As the saying goes :
“Success is a journey and not a destination”
While you try to achieve your larger purpose of life, break it into smaller goals. Achievement of each goal gives you success and it will further provide you with positive energy to move ahead towards the larger goal. Important criteria here is that each smaller goal must contribute towards achieving the success of your larger purpose.
What is your success in life?
Now you know success is linked with aim or purpose and you also know why do you need success. It will be easy for you to define what is your success in life? So to define your success, you need to define your aim. And if you are thinking earning money as your aim, let’s validate it. More money will surely help you to lead better materialistic life. Will this also give you sense of well being? That depends on how you earn money. Further, how much money will give you sense accomplishment? If you can’t define this specifically, you will never be successful since you will always run behind more money. What is that aim in your life, which will give you the sense of accomplishment and so the sense of being successful?
Tool to identify your aim for personal success:
One of the effective tool to identify your personal success aim is to write down answers of below questions about yourself. Yes, I do mean it when I say write down. Writing them down will help you to brainstorm by revisiting them and putting them into a meaningful structure which will further help you to conclude and arrive at your life aim. While writing answers, its OK to be generic first and becoming specific at later stage while revisiting your answers depending on what comes to your mind.
- What should be the most wonderful memory I can collect?
- What makes me feel happy?
- How do I want contribute to improve society?
- How does my health and my body matters to me?
- What cause me shoot out jumping happily from my bed in morning?
- Which new things I would be happy to learn?
- What lifestyle do I want to achieve?
- What do I want people to say about me?
- Where have I already seen success in my life? How can I further build on it?
- What things about myself I would like to improve?
Once you write down above answers about yourself, next step is to revisit them and each time you revisit, try to be more specific. It is absolutely OK to revisit your answers multiple times till the time you get your final answer about your life’s aim which can define your personal success.
For example, I want to inspire and empower others on their journey to success and prosperity. So this becomes my purpose. If you are also inspired today, this is my success in life.
